International Symposium in honor of Prof. David A. Shirley

From the Forefront of Physical Chemistry to Accelerator-based Light Sources

Berlin, Friday, July 4th, 2014
Fachbereich Physik, Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin-Dahlem

David Shirley has enjoyed a distinguished career as scientist and administrator, much of it at UC Berkeley/ LBNL.  He has also had a close connection to the Fachbereich Physik, Freie Universität Berlin, which began when many of the later members of the Fachbereich were students, guests or scientists in his group. He spent two longer visits at the Freie Universität, in 1970 and in 1989/90, the latter as a Humboldt Awardee. Shirley received the first honorary doctorate conferred by our department, in 1987.  His influence was felt on scientific developments within the department as well as in setting up user facilities for the larger scientific community.  We take pleasure in honoring him with this symposium on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
