Intrinsic Stress Measurement and Cantilever Beam Method

Research Fields
A UHV-cantilever beam magnetometer was
developed to study the mechanical and magnetic
properties of thin and ultrathin films, which are
both related to the growth and microstructure
investigated by LEED and STM. As this tech-
nique enables both measurements of intrinsic
stress and magnetostriction, the magnetoelastic
energy, which may be a dicisive parameter for
magnetic anisotropies, can be determined with
monolayer sensitivity. Recently film-stress-
induced nonlinear behaviour of the magneto-
elastic coupling constants of epitaxial Fe(001)
was observed for the first time.
