Research Fields: Surfaces of Solids

The main activities of the group concern surface structure and surface dynamics: The structure of clean and adsorbate covered surfaces are studied under UHV-conditions by employing diffraction techniques (TEAMS, HAS-TOF), especially emphasizing atom beam diffraction and spot profile analysis low energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED) as well as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM/AFM). The growth of thin metallic films is also characterized with these techniques and in addition a new method based on the cantilever beam principle (ISM/CBM) was developed to study intrinsic stress and magnetism of thin films. The dynamical excitations of surfaces, adsorbate systems, and thin films are studied with inelastic helium beam scattering and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). With a home built low-cost but versatile low temperature STM we proved manipulation of single atoms and small molecules as well as nanostructuring of surfaces on an atom by atom basis. STM at very high temperatures is being developed for studies of surface phase transitions. These dedicated methods are augmented by conventional surface analysis techniques like low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy.
